On money

moneyMoney is important for everyone, isn’t it?  Here, let us think how we should deal with money.

  • Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. (Matthew 6:19~20)

The New Testament recommends us to look for the things more important than money.  I would not like to deny the importance of money, however I understand that we should think about contributing for the society before thinking about making money.

As we know from the above, Matthew advised us to “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven”.  But, how can we do that?  I understand that that means we should spend time, efforts and money to contribute for the society.  In the New Testament, there is a passage as follows.

  • If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.(Matthew 19:21)

If you can do this, that’s great.  In actuality, few people can do this, can’t they?  But, even if we can’t, it is important to have this kind of attitude.

But, what’s wrong with being rich?  I myself don’ t think that it is bad to become rich, however, I presume that once we become rich, we tend to lose something important.  In the New Testament, there is a passage as follows.

  • I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.(Matthew 19:23)

Many people want to become rich.  But those people might make themselves difficult to enter the kingdom of heaven.

The following passage is from “Republic” by Plato.

  • Such a man (philosopher) will be temperate and by no means greedy for wealth, for the things for the sake of which money and great expenditure are eagerly sought others may take seriously, but not he.(“Republic” 485:e)

How about you?  Are you greedy for wealth?
